A set of custom-designed, quality-crafted porcelain veneers is an investment in your smile — and yourself — that you will cherish for years to come. But a beautiful smile makeover requires a team that includes both a skilled cosmetic dentist and a skilled ceramist from a quality dental laboratory. In our experience, the lab that makes Lumineers does not produce beautiful results. Because of this, we haven’t offered Lumineers for the last 15 years.

Why Not Lumineers?

Lumineers are a product of the DenMat company and are under trademark restrictions that require them to be made exclusively in the DenMat laboratory. Specific to Lumineers, other brands of porcelain veneers don’t place these restrictions. And they greatly limit the ability of any dentist to guarantee an aesthetic result. Like other experienced cosmetic dentists, we are accustomed to working with our own trusted master ceramist, with whom we have built a collaborative relationship that allows us to consistently produce quality work. By contrast, the DenMat laboratory is large, impersonal, and criticized by established cosmetic dentists who feel that they tend to produce veneers that lend a bulky appearance to a patient’s smile.

Since there are plenty of other brands of porcelain veneers that don’t present this limitation, there’s no reason to take a chance with Lumineers. Many people are intrigued by the company’s claim that Lumineers can be placed without prior tooth preparation, and understandably so. Not needing to have your natural teeth shaved down before bonding can sound really appealing. But it’s important to keep in mind that tooth preparation involves removing only a very small margin of the enamel, about the thickness of a fingernail. This provides you the most desirable result, a seamless smile with each veneer flush against the enamel. In some cases, it may be possible to skip the tooth preparation process.
