Finding the Best Cosmetic Dentist Using Yelp?

I am in my late 50s and have an upcoming appointment for a smile makeover in the next few weeks. I’ve found a cosmetic dentist rated very high on Yelp and am excited to get going. My question lies in coloring. Because of my age, I am not sure that a super white will look natural on me. I have olive colored skin and blue eyes. Can you recommend a color that would look youthful, attractive, and natural for someone with my age and complexion?

Dear Elena,

I am glad you wrote before you started your smile makeover. I love that you are trying to do research ahead of time. I want to redirect what you are focusing on. I like that you are trying to find the best cosmetic dentist possible. That is wise. However, Yelp is not the best way to go about finding that dentist.

While it is great for finding things like an appliance repairman or a plumber, cosmetic dentistry is a bit different. Yelp does not distinguish why someone gets a high rating. As an example, I looked up best cosmetic dentists using a mid-sized city. Looking at the top four results only one of them actually does cosmetic work. They probably achieved their high ratings for a pleasant office or friendly staff.  The one dentist who did indicate cosmetic work on their website had no smile gallery or indication of post-doctoral training.

Here’s the problem. Smile makeovers are not adequately taught in dental school, nor is cosmetic dentistry a recognized specialty. That means any general dentist can do it regardless of their skill level. This has left way too many patients with a cosmetic dentistry horror story, spending thousands of dollars for a smile that ended up looking worse than before.

Finding an Expert Cosmetic Dentist

The easiest way for you to find an expert cosmetic is to look for someone who is accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). For a dentist to achieve AACD accreditation, they have to pass stringent exams as well as demonstrate their  artistry with a large number of specific cases laid out for them. AACD accredited dentists are hands down the best cosmetic dentists in the country.

That is what I would look for instead of searching on Yelp. Any one of them will give you a stunning smile. They will also know just what color to provide for your porcelain veneers. They’ll hold a consultation with you to determine what your dream smile is, then they will help you achieve it.
